Welcome back to the Primal Question Newsletter.
We’re in the middle of a series called the “Primal Question Manifesto”, where I’m laying out the core convictions behind the Primal Question Movement.
Today marks a major shift.
Up until now, we’ve focused on what happened in the past: the broader cultural conversation around core needs, the moment that culture collided with your story, the message you internalized as a child, and how that message continues to impact your life today.
The question is: what now? What do we do about it? How does any of this actually alter the trajectory of your future?
That’s what we’re talking about today.
The Most Strategic Decision You Can Make to Live a Thriving Life
First, I need to address a common pitfall, a mistake we tend to make once we finally have awareness of our core need.
We gain self-awareness and then act like it’s everyone else’s job to accommodate.
Awareness is supposed to give us more ownership and agency in our lives, but too often, our first move is to turn new insight into a new set of expectations for the people around us. You might not even realize you’re doing this, but the expectation shows up in subtle ways…
You discover your Primal Question, then find yourself frustrated with your spouse for not trying harder to answer it with a yes.
You bring this framework to your team, and all you can see are the ways they’re still answering your question with a no.
You tell your friend your Primal Question is, “Am I wanted?”, and then feel extra hurt next time they forget to invite you.
That’s all very understandable, but here’s the truth we must accept:
Your need is not their responsibility. It’s yours.
This is another subtle form of Kid Logic that’s still running in the background.
As a child, you had no power to meet your own needs, so you did what a kid should do. You looked outward. You delegated the answer to your Primal Question to the adults in your life. Even your Scramble strategies were a way to get them to answer your question with a yes.
Most of us still carry this default posture when the fact is, you’re not that kid anymore.
Your circumstances have changed, and you’ve changed.
It’s time to stop looking to others to answer your Primal Question for you.
It’s time to step up as that healthy adult your younger self needed back then. Instead of moving through life, subconsciously asking your Primal Question to your spouse, your boss, your friends, and even strangers, you self-answer with your own “yes”. Instead of living “for” your Primal Question, you live “from” your Primal Truth.
Your Primal Truth is what happens when you flip the question into a statement.
Am I safe? becomes I am safe.
Am I loved? becomes I am loved.
Am I good enough? becomes I am good enough.
You stop living in an anxious state of “wondering” if your need will be met. Instead, you live from the calm, grounded state of “knowing” it is met because you are the one taking ownership to meet it.
This is the most strategic move you can make in life.
Not therapeutic. Strategic.
Strategy is the path you take to get to an outcome. Right now, you’re already running a strategy to meet your core need. It’s called the Scramble: The people-pleasing. The perfectionism. The overworking. The hypervigilance. The codependency. The coping mechanisms.
It’s wildly inefficient and expensive. It burns your emotional, psychological, and physical energy every day. It requires self-abandonment, and it’s responsible for the stress, anxiety, and overwhelm in your life.
What I’m trying to get you to understand is that there’s another, more efficient strategy to meet your need, and it doesn’t cost you yourself.
It’s what we call Self Leadership.
You become the primary steward of your Primal Question. This doesn’t mean others can’t participate in answering it. It simply means the order of priority changes.
3 “Yeses” to Step Into Self Leadership and Live From Your Primal Truth
1. Receive God’s yes.
Not everyone reading this has a faith, so if this doesn’t apply, skip to number two.
But if you believe in God, here’s what I want you to know. He wants to answer your Primal Question with a thousand yeses. He’s not withholding it, and He’s not making you earn it. The relationship He wants with you runs straight through your question, and the answer has been yes the whole time.
The problem is, most of us won’t allow ourselves to receive it. We read about it. We sing about it. Some of us teach it. Yet nothing changes in our lives, because we’re still living in the uncertainty of the question instead of living in the freedom of our Primal Truth.
2. Answer your own Primal Question with a yes.
Some tough love, friends.
You can’t possibly expect anyone else to meet your core need if you won’t take any action to meet it yourself. You are responsible for your life. You need to take ownership of your internal conversation and lead yourself into the truth.
By the way, living in your Primal Truth is not a wishy-washy feeling.
It’s not empty self-talk. Stepping into your Primal Truth is about taking accurate stock of your life. Kid Logic only lets you see the evidence of the no. It zooms all the way in on the one place your question is being answered no, and then convinces you that’s the whole picture.
Leading yourself is about widening the aperture to see the full frame of your life. To see the ways your Primal Truth really is true. If you look, I promise you the evidence is there.
3. Invite 1-3 Others to Participate in Answering Your Question With a Yes
That’s the key word: participate.
This isn’t a demand or a requirement. You invite a small handful of trusted people (your spouse, a close friend or two) into the vulnerable place of knowing what you actually need, and you let them join you in it.
One quick tip here: be hyper-specific.
An unspoken expectation is an unfair expectation, and an unclear need will never be met.
You are responsible for clearly communicating to others how they can answer your Primal Question. Before you have a conversation like this, write down 2 specific ways the other person can practically answer your question with a yes.
It’s a gift you receive when they give it, not a debt they owe you.
What about everyone else in your life?
That’s where we’re heading next week, and what the entire Primal Question Movement is leading to.
Here’s the wonderful thing that happens when you step into your Primal Truth. All that energy you were wasting on the Scramble? All of that gets freed up.
You stop the Scramble, and you get to step into your Primal Gift.
Instead of asking everyone to answer your question, you get to give them a gift that only you can give.
